Evaluation of different Apexification treatments of teeth with immature apices and apical periodontitis on the fractal dimensions of trabecular bone

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate in the fractal dimension (FD) time‐dependent changes of periapical bone after two different apexification treatments in teeth with immature apices and apical periodontitis. This study included 55 cases treated with apexification. Cases were divided into two groups: a calcium hydroxide group and a mineral trioxide aggregate group. In each case, the lesion area was evaluated by fractal analysis on periapical radiographs obtained before and 1‐year after treatment vi… Show more

“…The present study presented no significant correlation in the FD values regarding gender, consistent with the previous studies (Ugur Aydın et al, 2019;Ince Yusufoglu et al, 2021) except Ling et al (2014) who reported that the FD significantly differed by age and gender. The same radiography technique and exposure settings for the initial and postoperative radiographs were used in the present study to be consistent.…”

“…However, there have still been concerns about CBCT due to higher costs and radiation exposure during diagnosing of apical lesions. In the present study, periapical radiography was preferred for diagnosis, treatment, and postoperative evaluation by PAI and FA (Ugur Aydın et al, 2019; Ince Yusufoglu et al, 2021). According to the PAI evaluation, the present study's healing outcome was 90.4%.…”

“…For example, a study reported that in healed cases, FD values increased significantly, compared with baseline values, 1 year after re‐treatment [32]. Similarly, Yusufoğlu et al[33] showed that FD values increased at 1‐year follow‐up period after MTA plug and calcium hydroxide apexification treatment. On the contrary, a study reported that the FD decreased after clinically successful endodontic treatment [34].…”

“…It was investigated how the fractal dimensions of trabecular bone of the periapical bone showed a prospective morphological change after two different apexification treatments in teeth with apical periodontitis. The lesion area of the case was evaluated with the fractal analysis method on the periapical radiographs obtained before the treatment and 1 year after the treatment with the Image-J program (18). In addition, Tosun et al calculated the fractal size of abnormal tissue areas around the root apex on periapical radiographs taken before and after treatment in a retrospective study of 50 patients.…”
