Evaluation of fungal isolates for the inhibition of vegetative growth of Venturis inaequalis

Abstract: As a part of a broader study on biological control of apple scab, caused by Venturia inaequalis, a collection of 183 microorganisms originating from apple leaf litter was evaluated for their inhibitory effects on the vegetative growth of V. inaequalis. In a first screening, based on dual culture, 31 isolates (17%) showed inhibition. From these isolates, 11 fungi were selected for quantitative evaluation based on the presence of a distinct zone of inhibition. The selected fungi were evaluated again, in a more p… Show more

“…In addition, one has to be cautious in applying a chemical solution for the russeting problem, as fungicide-resistant yeast strains exist (Smolka, 1993;Gildemacher et al, 2004). Moreover, yeasts can function as antagonists against various post-harvest diseases (Andrews et al, 1983;Filonow, 1999), and possibly also against scab (Venturia inaequalis) (Mercier & Wilson, 1994;Ouimet et al, 1997).…”

“…Dual-culture assay plates were then compared to Fusarium strains grown singly on PDA as controls. Linear mycelial growth of Fusarium strains from both treatments was measured and recorded daily for 7 days (Ouimet, Carisse, and Neumann 1997;Harveson and Kimbrough 2000).…”

“…Unfortunately, no corrélation was observed between in vitro and in vivo tests and promising bacteria were not tested under field conditions.
