“…The ranges of water quality parameters during the experimental periods were: temperature 28–30 °C, pH 7.2–7.99, dissolved oxygen 3.84–4.69 mg L −1 , total alkalinity 126–145 mg CaCO 3 L −1 , total hardness 160–174 mg CaCO 3 L −1 , nitrite–nitrogen (NO 2 –N) 0.06–0.23 mg L −1 and total ammonia nitrogen 0.24–0.36 mg L −1 in the experimental tanks which were found to be within the favourable ranges for L. fimbriatus rearing (Jena et al . ).…”

“…Water quality parameters were within acceptable limits for the seed rearing of carps (Jena et al, 2011). pH was in the alkaline range throughout the experimental duration, indicating favourable conditions for biological production.…”

“…The survival of L. fimbriatus fry ranged from 49-56% when the stocking density was 20 million ha -1 . (Jena et al 2011) Jena et al (1998 recorded maximum survival of 61.6, 67.8 and 69.9% in nursery rearing of catla, rohu and mrigal respectively, at a stocking density of 2.5 million ha -1 . Rohu spawn reared @ 2.25 to 6.25 million ha -1 recorded a survival range of 41-65% when the fry were provided with groundnut oil cake and rice polish (1:1) as supplementary feed (Anon, 1984).…”

“…L. fimbriatus is basically a benthic fish which graze on algae, protozoa, rotifers and diatoms that grow on submerged rocks and twigs (Bhatnagar and Karamachandani, 1970;Talwar and Jhingran, 1991;Das, 2011). In a grow-out study, Jena et al (2011) demonstrated the compatibility of this species in polyculture with major carps. Keshavanath et al (2002) and Mridula et al (2003) have reported L. fimbriatus as a good periphyton grazer.…”
