Evaluation of Gum Katira as a Model Sustained Release Adjuvant in the Preparation of Etodolac Loaded Microsphere.

Abstract: Aims:The aim of present study was to evaluate Gum Katira obtained from the plant Cochlospermum religiosum (Family Cochlospermaceae) as a matrix forming pharmaceutical excipient for a novel drug delivery system. Materials and Methods: Gum Katira was used for the drug release retarding material in microsphere formulation using Etodolac as a model drug. Etodolac was found to be compatible with the matrix material Gum Katira by conducting the various physiochemical and instrumental analysis. Result: Etodolac loade… Show more

“…Microsphere formulations provide longer duration of drug action with minimal gastric irritation. As microsphere preparations contain the drug embedded in the matrix made of guar gum and sodium alginate, resulting in a continuous slow release through a longer period [7]. Metformin decreases blood glucose levels in the patients, those who do not produce insulin in appreciable quantity to control hyperglycemia [8].…”

“…The physicochemical evaluation revealed that ELGKMs with high drug entrapment efficiency (70-75%) delivered the drug for prolong period of time (10-12 hours) in a sustained fashion. There were no significant chemical interaction among the excipients used in the microspheres preparation (Ruhidas et al, 2016).…”

“…A separate acidic aqueous solution (100 mL) containing Tween 80 (50 µL) and a slight amount of polyvinyl alcohol was subjected to mechanical stirring (900 rpm) and to it the previously prepared W 1 /O emulsion was added drop wise using a 16-gauge syringe to form W1/O/W2 emulsion with a continuous stirring for 2-2.5 hours. The resultant microspheres formed were washed with distilled water followed by air drying for 24 h and final storage in desiccators for pharmacological investigation (Ruhidas et al 2016).…”

“…Each device consists of own advantages and disadvantages towards the delivery of drugs in a controlled manner, where polymeric microsphere persuaded to be a promising drug carrier in this field. These polymeric microspheres are consisting of biodegradable polymer matrix, where the therapeutic agent uniformly disseminated within the matrix and the loaded drug released at a sustained rate over a wide area of drug absorption during passage through GI tract without being affected by contents in the track, gastric emptying, and different transient rates (Bharaniraja et al, 2011a;Ruhidas et al, 2016). The composition of the polymer matrix of microsphere plays the critical role in designing the controlled release dosage form, where researchers are more inclining towards natural polysaccharides for their beautiful inherent properties, such as, biocompatible, biodegradable, sustainable, reliable, and inexpensive compared to other synthetic or semisynthetic products (Emeje et al, 2009).…”
