IntroductionSensory dysfunctions and cognitive impairments are related to each other. Although a relationship between tinnitus and subjective olfactory dysfunction has been reported, there have been no reports investigating the relationship between tinnitus and olfactory test results.MethodsTo investigate the relationship between tinnitus and olfactory test results, we conducted sensory tests, including hearing and visual examinations. The subjects included 510 community-dwelling individuals (295 women and 215 men) who attended a health checkup in Yakumo, Japan. The age of the subjects ranged from 40 to 91 years (mean ± standard deviation, 63.8 ± 9.9 years). The participants completed a self-reported questionnaire on subjective tinnitus, olfactory function, and hearing function, as well as their lifestyle. The health checkup included smell, hearing, vision, and blood examinations.ResultsAfter adjusting for age and sex, the presence of tinnitus was significantly associated with subjective olfactory dysfunction, poor olfactory test results, hearing deterioration, vertigo, and headache. Additionally, high serum calcium levels and a low albumin/globulin ratio were significantly associated with low physical activity and nutrition. Women scored higher than men in olfactory and hearing examinations, but there was no gender difference in vision examinations.ConclusionSubjective smell dysfunction and poor smell test results were significantly associated with tinnitus complaints. Hearing and vision were associated even after adjusting for age and sex. These findings suggest that evaluating the mutual relationships among sensory organs is important when evaluating the influence of sensory dysfunctions on cognitive function.

Objective: The emergence of Human immunodeciency virus(HIV), Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections has posed the greatest challenge to public health in modern era. Study was done retrospectively to nd out burden of HIV, HBV and HCV in community. Similarly we tried to study other sociodemographic factors and correlates of HIV. Methodology: A retrospective study was done. Serum samples were processed and analysed in the department of microbiology, in tertiary care hospital since JAN 20 to JAN 22. The study included all OPD and IPD patients sample. Results: A total of 21600 samples were analysed retrospectively. Prior consent was taken. Of these, 13490 were males and 8110 were females. The seroprevalence of HIV was found to be 0.5% , HBsAg 0.70% and HCV was 0.25 among population visiting Tertiary Care Centre. Coinfection rate of hepatitis B and hepatitis C with HIV positive patients was found to be 5 (0.23%). Conclusions: Prevalence HIV, HBV and HCV seropositivity was found to be very low in this population around our tertiary care hospital. Sexually transmitted infection history was most relevant risk factors of co-infection among seropositive population. Coinfection rate of hepatitis B and hepatitis C with HIV positive patients was on higher side among patients with high risk sexual behaviour..

Audiological profile of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Background: South Africa shows a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes with reported association with auditory dysfunction.Objectives: To describe the audiological profile of adults with this metabolic condition.Method: Employing a descriptive research design, 35 individuals with type 2 diabetes, selected through purposive sampling, underwent a basic audiological assessment in addition to extended high-frequency (EHF) audiometry, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) testing and neurological auditory brainstem response (ABR) test.Results: This study revealed a 31.4% prevalence of hearing loss with 81.8% being sensorineural in nature. Poor hearing thresholds were observed at 16 kHz (n = 19; 54.3%), 18 kHz (n = 24; 68.6%) and 20 kHz (n = 30; 85.7%) in the right ear and at 16 kHz (n = 20; 57.1%), 18 kHz (n = 24; 68.6%) and 20 kHz (n = 30; 85.7%) in the left ear. Absent DPOAEs were observed at 6 kHz (n = 20; 51.7%) and 8 kHz (n = 24; 68.6%) in the right ear and at 6 kHz (n = 17; 48.6%) and 8 kHz (n = 29; 82.9%) in the left ear, possibly indicating that type 2 diabetes specifically targets higher frequency hearing. The ABR results revealed a delayed absolute latency of wave III bilaterally (right ear –69%; left ear – 51%), suggesting an impact of this metabolic disease on retro-cochlear pathways.Conclusion: Hearing loss should be recognised as a comorbidity accompanying type 2 diabetes, which indicates the need for routine comprehensive audiological assessments to facilitate early detection and intervention.Contribution: The present findings have implications for audiology clinical protocols; diabetes related health policies and patient education.
