Transportable boiler plants are widespread in the northern regions of the Russian Federation and have a large and stable demand in various spheres of life. The equipment used and the schemes of existing boiler plants are outdated—they require replacement and modernization. Our proposed new installation includes a coil type steam boiler and ancillary equipment designed with the identified deficiencies in mind. The steam boiler coils are coaxial cylinders. The scope of the modernized transportable boiler plant is an oil field in the subarctic continental climate. The work is aimed at completing an experimental and theoretical study of the operation of a coil type steam boilers under real operating conditions. Experimental data on the operation of boiler plants are presented. The dependences of the fuel consumption of boiler plants on the temperature and pressure of the coolant are obtained. Statistical analysis is applied to the collected data. Conclusions are formulated and a promising direction is laid out for further research and improvement of coil type steam boilers. Equations are proposed for calculating the convective component of radiant-convective heat transfer in gas ducts, taking into account the design features of boiler units by introducing new correction factors. Comparison of the calculated and experimental data showed their satisfactory agreement.

Stationary and mobile steam generators are widely used in low ambient temperatures, for example in areas described by the Köppen world map as subarctic. Such equipment is often used in oil and gas fields. At the moment, the existing standard boiler plants are outdated. The purpose of this work is an experimental study of a coiled-type direct-flow steam generator developed by the authors in the winter period at low ambient temperatures. The tasks to be solved to achieve the goal are associated with obtaining experimental data at different operating modes of the installation, their processing and the development of empirical coefficients of gas movement inside the coaxial cylinders of the steam generator. In addition, another task is to develop a theoretical basis for the obtained experimental data. Based on the results of the work, the dependences of pressure and temperature on fuel consumption in various modes were obtained. Statistical analysis was applied to the data obtained. The authors have developed equations for calculating the convective part in the process of radiant-convective heat transfer in coaxial gas ducts, taking into account the design features of a once-through coil-type steam generator. Finally, promising directions for further improving the efficiency of steam generators of this type are proposed.

This work investigates the flow and heat transfer on the gas side of a heat recovery steam generator. During the operation of a power plant, off-design conditions that significantly impact the steam generator efficiency, caused by variations in the gas flow, corrosion and fouling of tube walls, may be encountered. In addition, passages around the heat exchanger modules develop along the equipment lifetime, allowing the bypass of flowing gas into zones of the boiler of low heat transfer effectiveness. These issues are here addressed via computational simulations, using a commercial software application for solving the mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations. The boiler geometry and the boundary conditions for the simulations are taken from a real, typical industrial heat recovery steam generator fed by gas turbines exhaust gases. Flow turbulence is modeled using the k-model, and heat exchanger modules are considered as porous media, through which the exhaust gases flow while supplying heat to the water. The water flow properties are specified from process data. Numerical results for thirteen realistic off-design conditions are compared to those for the boiler normal operation point. It is found that the cases considering deviation of gas to the trapdoors and lateral passages have the greatest impact on the boiler efficiency. Results indicate an efficiency drop from 86% for the base case to 48% for the case with gas deviations. In addition, a reduction in the gas flow or the plugging of the low-pressure economizer tubes may decrease the boiler efficiency by more than 10% points.
