Evaluation of Insecticidal Effects of Plants Essential Oils Extracted from Basil, Black Seeds and Lavender against Sitophilus oryzae

Abstract: The risk of using synthetic insecticides to the environment, human health, and the emergence of new genera of pests resistant to that kind of drugs, have led to attention in natural compounds. The present study aimed at evaluating the insecticidal activity of 0.25–6 mg/cm2 of basil (Ocimum basilicum), black seeds (Nigella sativa), and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oils (EOs) against one of the major stored product pests, Sitophilus oryzae (L.). This was done by assessing mortality and repellent p… Show more

“…This compound may be responsible for the toxicity against C. capitata of EOs extracted from rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L., Lamiaceae) and lavender ( Lavandula latifolia Medik. ( =Lavandula angustifolia Moench) Lamiaceae) leaves [ 49 ] and its toxic activity has been already acknowledged against other pests of agricultural interest [ 137 , 138 , 139 , 140 ]. So far, studies on the toxicity by fumigation of EOs and their main compounds on true fruit fly immature stages have been rare and often inconclusive [ 141 , 142 ].…”

“…A large body of research has been dedicated to studying the essential oils compositions of the species under discussion [8][9][10][11]. They have been popularly used in pharmaceuticals, medicine, cosmetic products, the tobacco industry, agriculture, and perfumery; for aromatherapy; food preparation, preservation, and flavoring; and as melliferous and ornamental plants [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. In general, medicinal plants are important in pharmacological research and drug development, especially in cases where they are used as starting materials [21].…”
