Evaluation of Jackbean (Canavalia ensiformis) Lines Derived from Natural Crossing with Swordbean (Canavalia gladiata)

Abstract: Jackbean (Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC.), is considered one of the few pulses that grow really well on the highly leached, nutrient-depleted lowland tropical soils. Natural pollination with its close relative, the swordbean (Canavalia gladiata (Jacq.), offers exploitable opportunities for gene introgression and varietal improvement without the necessities of artificial pollination. This paper reports the growth, biomass yield, nodulation and seed quality of advanced generation lines derived from the natural cr… Show more

“…It is used as a cover crop in soil erosion control and occasionally its seeds are used as foodstuff. [1,2] Canavalia is relatively free from diseases, pests and weeds, causing this plant to be an interesting object for research. [2] The allelopathic potential of extracts obtained from leaves [3] and roots [4] of Canavalia ensiformis in different organic solvents was evaluated early in our group using bioassay procedures.…”

“…Seeds are 2À3.5 cm £ 1.5À2 cm in area, and red or red-brown, rarely black, pink, or white in color; hilum is 1.5À2.0 cm long. Fruit is a linear-oblong pod, slightly compressed, sometimes curved, 20À40 (À60) cm £ 3.5À5 cm (Emebiri 1996). The effects of ethanolic extract of this plant on anticancer activity, as an antioxidant and antiangiogenic agent were previously reported (Emebiri 1996).…”

“…In Western countries, this legume is used as a cover crop and the roasted seeds are ground to prepare a coffee-like drink (Bressani et al, 1987). Genotypes using AMMI and GGE bi-plot Models grown relatively easily and produce high yields in the regions of low altitude, high temperature and relative humidity (Molina et al, 1974).…”
