Protective effect ofCanavalia gladiata(sword bean) fruit extracts and its flavanoidal contents, against azathioprine-induced toxicity in hepatocytes of albino rats

Abstract: This study was aimed at evaluating the hepatoprotective activity of Canavalia gladiata seed extract in azathioprine (AZP) intoxicated rats. AZP (1 mg/ml i.p.) was administered for 22 days to induce hepatotoxicity in Wistar rats. Canavalia gladiata seed extract was prepared using methanol and water. The methanolic extract of Canavalia gladiata at a dose of 100 or 200 mg/kg was used to determine hepatoprotective activity by measuring liver tissue damage markers like serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic … Show more

“…The nutritional components of dried soybeans and pods consist of general components such as protein, fat, and moisture, as well as various vitamins and minerals, and the contents are shown in Supplementary Materials Table S1 . Recently, various functional activities of SB such as anti-obesity [ 24 ], antioxidant [ 25 ], anti-inflammatory [ 26 ], hematopoietic expansion improvement [ 27 ], hepatoprotective, and anti-angiogenic effects [ 28 ] have been reported. However, scientific research using SB pods (SBP) has not been conducted except for anti-inflammation and anti-obesity, and the mechanism is not yet clearly defined.…”

“…It is rich in different nutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals (Ekanayake et al ., ). Furthermore, recent studies find that it possesses biological functions, such as anti‐inflammatory, haematopoietic improving, hepatoprotective and anti‐angiogenic activities (Jeon et al ., ; Kim et al ., ,b; Kumar & Reddy, ). Therefore, the sword bean has great nutritional and medicinal potential.…”

“…Black and red of C. gladiata are excellent antioxidant phenolic sources (Gan et al 2016). In a rat experiment, using seed extract of C. gladiata with doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg can decrease AZP-induced hepatotoxicity (Kumar and Reddy 2014). C. ensiformis has been tested containing the neutral lipids of 2.21% of whole seeds, as well as the fatty acid, i.e., palmitic (15%), oleic (54%), linolenic (8%), and linoleic (7%) (Gaydou et al 1992).…”
