Evaluation of Liver Function Tests and Serum Bilirubin Levels After Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Abstract: Introduction: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been known as one of the most important prevalent and minimally invasive surgeries in medicine. Aim: The aim here was to investigate the changes in liver enzymes and bilirubin levels after laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients diagnosed with chronic cholecystitis. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Poursina Hospital (Rasht, Iran) and 128 patients who met both inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled for further investigations. After coll… Show more

“…Although the cause of this increase is not fully revealed, it is considered to be multifactorial. These markers may increase in response to the age of the patient, the prevalence of additional diseases, the type of anesthetic drugs used, the length of anesthesia, or a possible bile duct injury [4,10]. Surgery is insufficient to explain the discrepancy in increase observed since the age distribution in both groups in our study is equal (Table 1).…”

“…Therefore, this change could not be an appropriate tool for monitoring iatrogenic bile duct injuries. They followed their patients for 48 hours after surgery, and the final values for AST and ALT were still significantly different from preoperative measurements 59 . This result could be confirmed through a longer follow-up course.…”

“…Many reports have shown that the increase in LFTs after uncomplicated LC appears to be a phenomenon without clinical significance since all values return to normal within 72 hours [54][55][56][57][58] . Persisting high values may be seen however, and, if no findings of choledocholithiasis exist, this has been attributed to late common bile duct stricture due to thermal damage 58,59 .…”

“…Our study observed a case with normal bilirubin returned to abnormal after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Maleknia and Ebrahimi in 2020, 13 demonstrated significant increases in the bilirubin values. They considered that if no side effects are seen after surgery, this increase appears to be due to the Chen-Wang reported a case of hepatocellular injury where the case clinically was shown an elevation in aminotransferase and bilirubin levels.…”
