Evaluation of Mechanisms to Improve Performance of Mobile Phone Surveys in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Research Protocol

Abstract: BackgroundMobile phone ownership and access have increased rapidly across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) within the last decade. Concomitantly, LMICs are experiencing demographic and epidemiologic transitions, where non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasingly becoming leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Mobile phone surveys could aid data collection for prevention and control of these NCDs but limited evidence of their feasibility exists.ObjectiveThe objective of this paper is to describ… Show more

“…This paper presents the qualitative results of a larger study [19] that used a sequential multimodal exploratory design (QUAL → QUAN), in which an initial phase of qualitative data collection and analysis is developed, followed by another where quantitative data are collected and analyzed [20,21]. The purpose of this design is to adapt and test a standardized MPS instrument in the specific context where it will be applied and obtain generalizable and replicable results in subsequent studies [21].…”

“…In 2015, experts in NCDs, mobile health and survey methodology selected questions from standardised surveys such as WHO STEPS and Tobacco Questions for Surveys to be included in the IVR survey 21. The initial questionnaire was tested at Johns Hopkins University for cognitive understanding and usability of the IVR platform with people who identified as being from an LMIC 26.…”

“…SSA is expected to reach 50% mobile phone penetration, or the percent of unique mobile phone users within a specific population, in 2021 and 52% penetration by 2025 [6,8]. In this context, demographers are considering the use of cell phone surveys to track national health indicators [9][10][11]. However, phone survey estimates need to be compared with FTF results before substituting data collection modes, to ensure phone survey estimates are valid.…”
