Evaluation of Melia azedarach extract-loaded poly (vinyl alcohol)/pectin hydrogel for burn wound healing

Abstract: Background In this study, a hydrogel comprising poly (vinyl alcohol)/pectin (PVA/PET) was prepared by the addition of Melia azedarach extract for epithelial restoration. M. azedarach extract (MAE) contains volatile organic plant-derived compounds with antimicrobial properties. MAE has a variety of physiological properties, including antimicrobial, insecticidal, and anti-inflammatory activity. This study aimed to investigate whether MAE-loaded PVA/PET hydrogels have protective effects against burn wound healing… Show more

“…Our results are supported by previous studies where Melia azedarach extract loaded poly (vinyl alcohol)/pectin hydrogel was developed for the treatment of burn wounds. During an in vitro scratch test, treatment with 50 μg/ml of Melia azedarach showed good recovery of wounds as compared to 10 μg/ml of Melia azedarach (Lee et al, 2022). The literature revealed that betulin-enriched extract from birch bark was loaded in nanoemulsion.…”

“…[31][32][33] Neovascularization was also present in all experimental groups, mainly in the treated groups and indicates an angiogenic effect that occurs as a microvascular network of new blood capillaries to guarantee the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the neo tissue. 34 As new blood vessels appear, the fibroblasts present proliferate and invade the clot in order to form the granulation tissue, some fibroblasts can differentiate into myofibroblasts, joining the wound margins. 35 As for the cellular aspects evaluated, a massive presence of lymphocytes/plasma cells, neutrophils and macrophages was observed, which exactly comprises the inflammatory phase, which involves the recruitment and infiltration of phagocytes at the wound site.…”

“…At this stage, all foreign bodies and tissue debris are removed from the wound site by phagocytes to prevent infection. 34,36,37 Treatments with PVA membranes alone also proved to be a promising dressing in the treatment of specific lesions, with much better results in reducing the exuberant inflammatory process, since it maintains moisture and acts as a physical barrier against contamination and protection of microorganisms with infectious potential. An ideal wound dressing should promote rapid healing with minimal patient discomfort, adhere to damaged tissue, maintain a balanced wet phase, exchange oxygen, protect against external infectious agents such as bacteria, and heal in an ideal microenvironment that can speed up the process.…”
