Evaluation of non-thermal plasma-induced anticancer effects on human colon cancer cells

Abstract: Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma has been introduced in various applications such as sterilization, wound healing, blood coagulation, and other biomedical applications. The most attractive application of non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma is in cancer treatment, where the plasma is used to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) to facilitate cell apoptosis. We investigate the effects of different durations of exposure to dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) plasma on colon cancer cells using measureme… Show more

“…Therapeutic uses include the treatment of skin diseases [94], blood coagulation [95] as well as dental treatment [96] and applications in dermatology such as chronic wound healing [97]. Recently, the potential application of plasma technology as a novel anticancer therapy has been assessed [98]. Induction of cancer cell death by both direct and indirect exposure of plasma has been reported [99,100].…”

“…(2) Therefore, CAP has potential for biomedical applications such as wound healing, (3)(4)(5)(6) infection control, (7)(8)(9)(10) and cancer therapy. (11)(12)(13)(14) There are at least three types of CAP used for biological samples: 1) plasma jets, 2) corona discharge plasma sources, and 3) dielectric barrier discharge plasma sources. (4) Plasma jets are easy to handle and convenient to apply to in vivo samples, such as mice and humans, in addition to in vitro samples such as cell suspensions and membrane vesicles.…”
