Background: Pregnancy results in certain physiological and metabolic changes that results to shift in certain biochemical markers and could even result in hypertension in some women thus predisposing them to risk of cardiovascular disease. While this is true, some women express these predisposing risk factors in subsequent pregnancies. Therefore, it may be a significant contribution to understand the dynamics of artherogenic indices with increasing number of pregnancies. Aim: The goal of the study was aimed to assess gravidity effect on artherogenic indices in both normotensive and hypertensive second-trimester pregnant women. Materials and Methods: At Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 100 pregnant women. The consenting patients who met the inclusion criteria were classified into two groups: normotensive (50 normotensive pregnant women in their second trimester) and hypertensive (50 hypertensive pregnant women in their second trimester) (HPW2T). The participants were subsequently split into three subgroups depending on gravidity: primigravida (no of pregnancy=1), multigravida (no of pregnancies>1), and grand multigravida (no of pregnancies≥5). For the assessment of TC, TG, HDL, and LDL, fasting blood samples were taken using the venepuncture technique. Mathematically, artheriogenic indices (AIP, CR-I, CR-II, AC, and APoB/APoA1) were calculated. At a P-value>0.05, the data was examined using ANOVA and the Tukey comparison test. Results: There was no significant difference in artheriogenic indices between the gravidity groups in the normotensive group, with a P-value>0.05, which was also the cases among those in the hypertensive group. Conclusion: The study has shown that gravidity does not have any effect on artheriogenic indices among normotensive and hypertensive pregnant women in the second trimester in Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.

This study was an exploratory prospective observational study in a cohort of patients on admission with COVID-19 in some health institutions in Nigeria. Patients within the age group of less than 25 years to greater than 50 years of age with PCR-confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, involved only those who gave consent. Ethical concern was highly upheld. Taro Yamman formula was used to determine the sample size of 400 and probability sampling technique used. Primary and secondary data sources were used. Clinical assessments and blood sample collected at one point in time following standard protocol according to WHO. Malaria diagnosis was done using microscopy through thin and thick film using Gemisha staining. All data were analyzed for descriptive statistics- frequency and percentage distributions and prevalence rates. Total malaria prevalence rate in the study was high 327 (81.8%) and in terms of severity the older age group (>50years) had high (84.8%) malaria parasitaemia. However, low parasiteamia 154 (38.5%) was common regardless of the age groups and formed the majority of malaria parasites detected while the high malaria parasitaemia was least with 59 (14.8%). The prevalence of COVID-19 co-infection with malaria was high as recorded in this study. The age group >50years had the highest number of COVID-19 patients with high malaria parasitemia. The study findings highlight the significance of understanding the possible medical and therapeutic implications of such overlapping co-infections in malaria endemic area with high morbidity burden. Routine Malaria screening and treatment should be an integral aspect of COVID-19 treatment regimen in malaria endemic region with much emphasis among the geriatrics. All malaria elimination programme and roll back malaria core values should be strengthened from vector control, to use of insecticide treated nets and others should be regularly practiced.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic began while improvement in malaria control and elimination had reached a peak. COVID-19 affected routine services particularly those for other killer infectious diseases including, HIV/AIDS and Malaria. This resulted in slowing progress in achieving control programs targets. Aim: The study was aimed at evaluating malaria and HIV coinfection among COVID-19 cohort in selected healthcare facilities in Rivers State of Nigeria. Methodology: The observational study showed a snapshot sampled only patients within the COVID-19 approved centers who consented to participate within the selected study area otherwise excluded. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 400 participants, giving subjects equal opportunity of participation. The majority of the data came from primary sources, but secondary sources were also used. Malaria testing was perform using microscopic method. Result outputs were presented on tables and charts. Results: The study showed high prevalence of malaria infection among COVID-19 patients -327 (81.8%) but low rate of HIV co-infection- 2 (0.5%). Conclusion: Much consideration should be channeled towards malaria endemicity and coinfection with COVID-19 unless it confers protective advantage as postulated by some studies however, a large scale and more in-depth study is suggested.
