Evaluation of ovarian mature cystic teratomas in our clinic: 110 cases

Abstract: . Two cases showed bilateral localization (1.8%). Only, 9.09% of the patients were postmenopausal. Operation method was laparotomy for 56.4% of the cases and laparoscopy for 19.1% of them. Mature cystic teratoma was detected in 24.5% of the cases during cesarean section. The most common preferred types of surgery were salpingo-oophorectomy (39.1%) and cyst excision (33.6 %). Torsion was detected intraoperatively in 6.36% of the cases. Malignant transformation was seen in a postmenopausal case (0.9%). Conclusio… Show more

“…The mean volume calculated in histopathological examinations was 206.90 ± 530.90 cm 3 in the present study. In the study of Eskicioglu et al , while the average tumor volume is 128.2 cm3, we obtained that the high rate in our study using the same calculation formula (volume calculation of the ellipsoid shape ovary= longitudinal * transverse * anteroposterior diameter * 0.52) [20]. Five cases in our data had torsion in conformity with the study of Ayhan et al [16].…”

“…2.8% were bilateral and this rate was lower than in the literature. Patients with mature cystic teratoma could have pain, menstrual disorder, and some other urinary and gastrointestinal complaints due to the pressure caused by the diameter of the mature cystic teratoma, and they are mostly asymptomatic and seen during the gynecological examination or incidentally during the surgery (18)(19)(20). In this study, 25 of the patients (17.4%) had a tumor over 10 cm diameter and pain along with complaints related to the pressure while 15 (10.5) of the cases were urgently operated on because of torsion, and in 13 (9.1%) patients, MCT was incidentally seen during the ceasarean section.…”
