Evaluation of phenolic profile, antioxidant and anticancer potential of two main representants of Zingiberaceae family against B164A5 murine melanoma cells

Abstract: BackgroundCurcuma longa Linnaeus and Zingiber officinale Roscoe are two main representatives of Zingiberaceae family studied for a wide range of therapeutic properties, including: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, antibacterial, analgesic, immunomodulatory, proapoptotic, anti-human immunodeficiency virus properties and anticancer effects. This study was aimed to analyse the ethanolic extracts of Curcuma rhizome (Curcuma longa Linnaeus) and Zingiber rhizome (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) in terms o… Show more

“…In a recent publication, Danciu and coworkers showed that EG exhibits antiproliferative and proapoptotic activity in murine melanoma B164A5 cell line (Danciu et al, ). On the other hand, research findings indicated a high cytotoxic effect of EG against Raji cells derived from human (non‐Hodgkin's) Burkitt's lymphoma (Parvizzadeh et al, ).…”

“…These results suggest that gingerol could be used as an antitumor agent that may serve in combination therapies with TRAIL in patients with TRAIL-resistant glioblastoma (Lee et al, 2014). “…Preclinical studies have demonstrated that antioxidant supplementation leads to selective melanoma cell death through increased ROS-scavenging activity mediated by elevated SOD and catalase activity [35-37]. By contrast, dietary polyphenol antioxidants such as like resveratrol, tocopherol, and quercetin exert direct ROS-scavenging activity and have produced highly variable preclinical and clinical outcomes [38].…”

“…Santos et al [18] demonstrated that the hydroalcoholic extract of Jacaranda decurrens leaves significantly reduced the formation of paw edema and myeloperoxidase activity in rats. Some studies on the potential efficacy of phenolic compounds in prevention or treatment of skin disorders and reduction of healing time have been published [19][20][21].…”
