“…Poor seed germination together with the release of phenolics at the base of axenic shoots were reported as most serious limitations for the initiation of in vitro cultures in lentisk (Mulas et al, 1998;Fascella et al, 2004;Ruffoni et al, 2004;Mascarello et al, 2007;Yıldırım, 2012). In this study, various PGRs (BA and GA 3 ) in different concentrations were used to aid the germination of the seeds.…”

“…Piotto [1995] reported that neither mechanical scarification of seeds nor prechilling treatments improved the amount of germination of lentisk seeds. Although İsfendiyaroğlu and Özeker [2001] reported a high percentage of seed germination (87.99%) when seeds were pretreated with 1000 ppm gibberellic acid, percentage of germinated seeds was ranged between 0 and 56% in the lentisk population [Mulas et al 1998] and fifteen ecotypes of 33 (45%) showed absence of seed germination. P. lentiscus plays a role of fundamental importance in the conservation and evolution of Mediterranean marquis [Garcia-Fayos and Lolina 1990].…”

“…It is a source of sustenance for a multipurpose use. It was also reported that P. lentiscus like all of the other Pistacia species and cus seeds also decreases with the time of storage [Mulas et al 1998]. These characteristics of the seeds reduce the rate of natural propagation.…”

“…The Mediterranean coastal ecosystems ''macchia'' is characterized by evergreen sclerophyllous bushes and shrubs, well adapted to the arid climate (Cody and Mooney 1978;Mitrakos, 1980). Within the macchia, the Pistacia lentiscus (Lentisk), a xerophytic and thermophytic shrub, is one of the most represented species, being able to cover over 80% of the soil surface (Mitrakos 1980;Mulas et al 1998;Rossi et al 2001). …”
