Evaluation of Salivary and Serum Antioxidant and Oxidative Stress Statuses in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis: A Case-Control Study

Abstract: Aim: Local bacteria stimulate polymorphonuclear neutrophils to release reactive oxygen species in periodontitis. Increased levels of oxidative stress play a significant role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate total salivary and serum antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde in patients with chronic periodontitis.Materials and methods: Fifty-five healthy subjects and 55 patients with chronic periodontitis, with an age range of 30–50 years, were evaluated. After clinica… Show more

“…Significant changes in MDA levels with little or no change in antioxidant status were found in saliva and serum of patients with CP, indicating increased oxidative stress. 24,25,29,30 The review on studies regarding the activities of enzymatic antioxidants revealed that the results of the studies are contradicting to each other. Some studies showed that increase in SOD is associated with periodontitis, whereas others showed increased activities of enzymatic antioxidants as a protective reaction found among the people with periodontitis.…”

“…Baltacıoğlu et al [14] found that both lipid peroxidation levels and TAOC in saliva and serum is reduced in patients with CP while Ahmadi-Motamayel et al [15] reported slightly lower TAOC in the periodontitis group compared to healthy control but was not statistically significant.…”

“…This process is able to stimulate the inflammatory response that causes the destruction of the periodontal tissues 11,12 . In addition to the antimicrobial effect 13 , another relevant point is the effect of stimulating the immune system through glutamine.…”
