Evaluation of sanitary status of grapevines in the Czech Republic

Abstract: A survey was made to evaluate sanitary status of grapevines in the Czech Republic with regard to occurrence of economically important viruses. Propagation material of 109 grapevine clones was tested for presence of Grapevine fanleaf virus, Arabis mosaic virus, Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 1, Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3, Grapevine virus A, Grapevine virus B and Grapevine fleck virus. Dormant canes were collected and cortical scrappings were analyzed by DAS-ELISA. All seven viruses tested were f… Show more

“…GLRaV-3 prevailed where 46% (83/179) of tested grapevines were positive for the virus presence. These data tally with the notion that GLRaV-3 is more common in the Mediterranean (Ahmed et al, 2004;Cabaleiro and Segura, 2006) and GLRaV-1 in the northern viticultural regions of the world (Credi and Giunchedi, 1996;Kominek et al, 2003). GLRaV-2 was found only in 3 out of 179 (1.7%) grapevines.…”

“…One of the most significant stress factors for plants in vineyards could also be virus infections. In monitoring the presence of the seven most wide-spread viruses in the Czech republic (which represents only a small proportion of the approximately 50 viruses that have so far been recognised in grapevines), 45% of arbitrarily selected vines were found to be infected with at least one virus ( Kominek and Holleinova, 2003 ). The effects of virus infection on plant growth and fruit yield/quality can be widely seen in commercial vineyards.…”

“…ArMV and GLRaV-1 were found the most frequently viruses than 10% of examined vines. Small number of vines was found to be infected with GVA and GVB (Kominek and Holleinova, 2003). More than 30% of tested vines were positive to be at least one of five of the tested viruses.…”

“…Grapevine viruses were detected using ELISA (Clark and Adams, 1977 and modified by Kominek and Holleinova, 2003). Commercial kits against GFLV, GLRaV (1 and 3), GVA, GFKV, PeRMV and ToRSV produced by Agritest, Valenzano, Italy were used in double antibody sandwishenzyme linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA) method according to instructions of manufacturer.…”
