Evaluation of score parameters for severity assessment of surgery and liver cirrhosis in rats

Abstract: Severity assessment in animals is an ongoing field of research. In particular, the question of objectifiable and meaningful parameters of score-sheets, as well as their best combination, arise. This retrospective analysis investigates the suitability of a score-sheet for assessing severity and seeks to optimise it for predicting survival in 89 male Sprague Dawley rats (Rattus norvegicus), during an experiment evaluating the influence of liver cirrhosis by bile duct ligation (BDL) on vascular healing. The follo… Show more

“…The animals were visited at least once daily during the entire study, to assess the rats’ general condition using a semiquantitative score sheet [ 61 ]. In the score, body weight, general condition, spontaneous behavior, and behavior-specific criteria were considered (5–9 points = low stress, 10–19 points = moderate stress, and ≥20 points = high stress).…”

Body weight, general condition, spontaneous behavior, and behavioral criteria were considered in the assessment (5-9 points = low stress, 10-19 points = moderate stress, and ≥20 points = high stress) [18]. In cases where animals had more than 20 points or 10-19 points for more than 72 h, animal welfare officers were consulted immediately, and animals were euthanized immediately if necessary.…”

“…A total of 89 male Sprague Dawley rats (Rattus norvegicus; RjHan: SD; Janvier Labs, Le Genest Saint Isle, France) entered the experiment; 79 of 89 rats successfully completed the entire study protocol and were included in this study. Because of the high dropout rate (7 animals died prematurely and 3 animals were euthanized prematurely because of reaching a predefined humane end-point), the score parameters used were retrospectively evaluated and these results are published separately [50].…”
