Evaluation of Shooting Distance by AFM and FTIR/ATR Analysis of GSR

Abstract: The techniques of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR ⁄ ATR) spectroscopy are applied to the analysis of gun-shot residue (GSR) to test their ability to determine shooting distance and discrimination of the powder manufacturers. AFM is a nondestructive technique that is capable of characterizing the shapes and size distributions of GSR particles with resolution down to less than a nanometer. This may be useful for estimation of the shooting distance. … Show more

“…Consequently, AFM imaging will only have any value when combined to one of the indicated techniques. Such a combination of technologies has been reported to be successful to evaluate shooting distances based on the shape and size of GSR (Quesant Q-Scope 250 Nomad) [57]. D'Uffizi et al explored micromechanical and micromorphological features of gunshot residue particles deposited on bullets and hands of a shooter and collected with double-sided tape.…”

“…On the other hand, vibrational spectroscopic techniques like infrared and Raman have acquired special significance whereas they merge a variety of features (Doty et al 2016;Mou et al 2008). Recently, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is now being incorporated as a genuinely valuable GSR evaluation method with sufficient precision and flexibility for the detection of organic compounds in GSRs (Bueno et al 2012;López-López et al 2012).…”
