“…D. magna can ingest all the suitable sizes of nanoparticles in the aquatic environment (Danabas et al, 2020) and exhibit delayed maturation and decreased offspring production (Park et al, 2021), which was further demonstrated in our experiment. The harmful effects of various concentrations of ZnO NPs on some indicators related to the development and reproduction of D. magna were exacerbated by the consumption of mixed food containing non-toxic Microcystis compared with high-quality food in our study.…”

“…On the contrary, the population growth rate of rotifers was recovered across five generations, although a delay in the reproduction was observed, probably indicating that the animal fitness was affected ( Martins et al, 2020 ). Furthermore, Park et al (2021 ) found that AgNPs not only could lead to negative effects on the reproductive success of D. magna over two consecutive generations but also cause several embryonic developmental arrests and abnormalities. These findings support the idea that effects caused by AgNMs may persist in microcrustaceans with time with risks at the population level.…”

“…Alterations in reproductive parameters due to NP exposure are usually related to a decrease in food consumption and, therefore, to lower energy availability (e.g., lipids) for offspring production (Gebara et al, 2019; Park et al, 2021; Saebelfeld et al, 2017; Völker et al, 2013). Several types of NP can generate reproductive disturbances in different microcrustaceans species.…”

“…Ag NP altered daphnids ( D. magna , D. pulex , and D. galeata) reproduction by inducing low offspring number (Adam et al, 2015; Hartmann et al, 2019; Rossetto et al, 2014; Völker et al, 2013; Zhao & Wang, 2012). Moreover, a recent study showed that such offspring reduction due to Ag NP could be exacerbated in successive generations, causing embryonic developmental arrests and abnormalities (Park et al, 2021). Within the Daphnidae group, C. silvestrii also documented a reduction in the number of offspring when exposed to different concentrations (0.5–10 μg L −1 ) of CuO NP (Mansano et al, 2018), which was coupled with oxidative stress and altered lipid levels.…”
