“…Factors hypothesized to be contributing towards the sinusodial seasonal relationship include local ecological and/or hydrological processes as described in Long et al (2014). The temporal TP concentration trends observed in this study are believed to be representative of long-term seasonal TP concentration trends at the Desjardins Canal.…”

“…The monitoring station setup as well as sample collection, retrieval, and processing are described in detail in Long et al (2014) but are described briefly below. The core of each monitoring station was a Teledyne ISCO (Model 6712) automatic water sampler equipped with a water level bubbler module (Model 730) as well as power and telephone connections to permit remote programming and data downloads.…”

“…Total phosphorus and other nutrient loading contributes to eutrophication problems which have been studied in depth throughout Ontario (Phosphorus et al 1981) (Winter and Duthie 2000) (Eyles, Meriano, and Chow-Fraser 2013) (Long et al 2014) (Kim et al 2016). Kim et al 2016 studied the relationship between total phosphorous and watershed attributes such as land use cover and physiographic characteristics to better understand how these parameters impact concentrations in the Bay of Quinte watershed.…”

“…Given the water retention time of over 150 days in R2 (Table 1), it is likely that a proportion of the measured MeHg in R1 in August (about 70 days later) was produced during the last winter, as water turnover upon ice-melt can mobilize MeHg produced at the sediment-water interface to the surface waters (Long et al, 2014). However, upstream MeHg is probably not the only source in R1 because while pCO 2 is higher in bays in August (Figure 4), it is more likely that these high pCO 2 are sustained by biological processing in the bays because the high gas exchange coefficients in these large systems would have evaded the CO 2 coming from R2 along the way (Rust et al, in preparation).…”
