Strengthening the DNA barcode database is important for a species level identification, which was lacking for seaweeds. We made an effort to collect and barcode seaweeds occurring along Southeast coast of India. We barcoded 31 seaweeds species belonging to 21 genera, 14 family, 12 order of 3 phyla (viz., Chlorophyta, Ochrophyta and Rhodophyta). We found 10 species in 3 phyla and 2 genera (Anthophycus and Chnoospora) of Ochrophyta were barcoded for the first time. Uncorrected p-distance calculated using K2P, nucleotide diversity and Tajima’s test statistics reveals highest values among the species of Chlorophyta. Over all K2P distance was 0.36. The present study revealed the potentiality of rbcL gene sequences in identification of all 3 phyla of seaweeds. We also found that the present barcode reference libraries (GenBank and BOLD) were insufficient in seaweeds identification and more efforts were needed for strengthening local seaweed barcode library to benefit rapids developing field such as environmental DNA barcoding. We also show that the constructed barcode library could aid various industrial experts involved in seaweed bio-resource exploration and taxonomy/non-taxonomic researches involved in climate, agriculture and epigenetics research in precise seaweed identification. Since the rise of modern high-throughput sequencing technologies is significantly altering bio-monitoring applications and surveys, reference datasets such as ours will become essential in ecosystem’s health assessment and monitoring.

O crescimento demográfico humano tem promovido extrema elevação dos impactos antrópicos, acarretando declínio da biodiversidade mundial em vários ecossistemas, tornando imprescindível a aplicação de monitoramentos eficazes e ações efetivas de conservação. Atualmente, existe uma tendência de que os monitoramentos sejam de menor custo operacional e financeiro, bem como que possam ser desenvolvidos por longa duração. Os biomarcadores de efeito (p. ex., ensaios cometa, micronúcleo e vermelho neutro), têm sido empregados com sucesso em espécies emblemáticas, que têm se mostrado um ótimo reflexo da qualidade de um ambiente. Tais espécies, nomeadas “sentinelas ambientais”, evidenciam impactos antrópicos danosos ainda nos momentos iniciais, antecipando ações de gestão que evitem danos persistentes (às vezes irreversíveis) nas espécies, populações e comunidades locais, que somente seriam constatados futuramente. Espécies sentinelas precisam ser resistentes o suficiente, residentes do ambiente em avaliação, possuir reduzida vagilidade e mostrar interação com o maior número de componentes ambientais, sejam eles abióticos ou bióticos. Os trabalhos desenvolvidos com espécies de invertebrados (p. ex., bivalves e crustáceos) e vertebrados (p. ex., peixes e mamíferos) têm mostrado a excelência e eficácia dos biomarcadores, com avaliações no nível celular e molecular. O presente estudo visa apresentar os procedimentos que devem ser adotados durante a avaliação da qualidade ambiental pelo uso de biomarcadores de efeito (genotoxicidade e citotoxicidade), desde a escolha das espécies sentinelas, os cuidados na condução dos protocolos e a eficácia dos métodos em casos reais.

Environmental Perception of Recreational Fishers in Urban Beaches

Recreational fishers depend on the good quality of those environments. The assessment of the environmental perception of social actors who show a sense of belonging to the landscape can better describe the impacts on the environment. This study aimed to assess the recreational fishers' perception of the environmental quality in four urban beaches. 170 recreational fishers agreed to participate in the research. They were required to respond to questions about their fishing strategies and their perception of the environmental quality of the beaches and the possible impacts on the fishing activity. Based on the responses presented, a description of both local fishing activities made, as well as an analysis of the perception of the beaches' environmental quality for fishers. On average, the recreational fisher ones have been working for 16.2 years. Pollution considered be the cause of diversity loss and local fauna's biomass loss by 70% of recreational fishers. The second main cause of those losses was the alterations on the natural landscape, reported by 50% of the recreational fisher ones. A PCA showed that to the recreational fishers the biodiversity and biomass loss related to the pollution over time (55.15%). Although the quality of the beaches is not satisfying to any of the fishers, they continue to attend and fish in those beaches.
