Evaluation of the Diagnostic Accuracy of Serum D-Dimer Levels in Pregnant Women with Adnexal Torsion

Abstract: We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of serum D-dimer levels in pregnant women with adnexal torsion (AT). The pregnant women with ovarian cysts who suffered from pelvic pain were divided into two groups; the first group consisted of the cases with surgically proven as AT (n = 17) and the second group consisted of the cases whose pain were resolved in the course of follow-up period without required surgery (n = 34). The clinical characteristics and serum D-dimer levels were compared between the groups. … Show more

“…There is detailed analysis, which revealed patients with cancer who had elevated D-dimer and elevated F 1 + 2 had the highest risk of developing VTE [37]. The D-dimer levels are not only useful in cancers, but this can also be utilized during pregnancy, where; diagnostic accuracy can be assessed for adnexal torsion (AT) in pregnant women [38]. Sometimes it needs to differentiate between other lesions such as fungal, bacterial and viral infections may also result DIC [39].…”

“…D‐dimer is a major degradation product of polymerized fibrin after blood coagulation and plasmin processing. Elevated plasma D‐dimer levels usually indicate active fibrinolysis and are observed in several disorders, including arterial and venous thromboembolic disease, disseminated intravascular coagulation, malignancy, and renal and liver disease . Serum D‐dimer has been reported as a useful diagnosis and prognosis parameter for several malignancies including ovarian cancer .…”

“…A third diagnostic test demonstrated to be valid in the evaluation of a suspected ovarian torsion is the D-dimer quantification. The clinical association between D-dimer values and ovarian torsion has been studied in animal models since 2011 and later retrospective studies have then concluded that this parameter may be used for the early diagnosis of adnexal torsion [6,7].…”
