Evaluation of the effects of differences in silicone hardness on rat model of lumbar spinal stenosis

Abstract: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS), one of the most commonly reported spinal disorders, can cause loss of sensation and dyskinesia. In currently used animal models of LSS, the spinal cord is covered entirely with a silicone sheet, or block-shaped silicone is inserted directly into the spinal canal after laminectomy. However, the effects of differences between these implant materials have not been studied. We assessed the degree of damage and locomotor function of an LSS model in Sprague-Dawley rats using silicone bl… Show more

“…Rats were housed under constant environment, with free access to food and water. Surgical procedures have been previously described in detail [ 28 ]. Briefly, animals were anesthetized with 2–3% isoflurane gas (Forane; BK Pham, Goyang, Korea), and a dorsal laminectomy was performed at L5 using fine rongeur.…”

“…The surgical procedures for inducing LSS at the L4 level have been detailed previously (Kim et al, 2021a). After suturing, the rats were administered cefazolin sodium intramuscularly for 3 days and acetaminophen orally for 3 days.…”

“…To achieve this, we employed a LSS animal model that accurately reflects the clinical conditions of human spinal stenosis. This model was carefully selected and developed according to established methods that effectively induce LSS (Kim et al, 2021a). For extradural applications of Sh2, we selected concentrations of 1 and 2 mg/kg for repeated epidural injections in the LSS model.…”
