Evaluation of the metabolic rate based on the recording of the heart rate

Abstract: The assessment of harsh working conditions requires a correct evaluation of the metabolic rate. This paper revises the basis described in the ISO 8996 standard for the evaluation of the metabolic rate at a work station from the recording of the heart rate of a worker during a representative period of time. From a review of the literature, formulas different from those given in the standard are proposed to estimate the maximum working capacity, the maximum heart rate, the heart rate and the metabolic rate at re… Show more

“…This aspect could be considered in a hypothetical adaptive control and optimization strategy of the office thermal plant system. Finally, we have focused on the calculation of the modified PMV (PMV_mod_Pos1 and PMV_mod_Pos3) based on the metabolic rate defined starting from the monitored heart rate data [12] (Figure 5).…”

“…The parametric model is useful to assess the ICQ based on: The wearable sensor is used to acquire the heart rate data in bpm in order to modify the metabolic rate values based on the revised approach [12] of the level 3 described in the ISO 8996.…”

“…The metabolic rate depends on the activity level. Heat is dissipated from the body (to keep its internal temperature constant) to the surroundings through the skin by heat transfer phenomena and activities [33]. In this case, the human body uses four processes of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation and evaporation of sweat) to maintain homeostasis [3].…”

“…To calculate PMV and PPD indices, the evaluation/measurement of six variables are required: the air temperature, the mean radiant temperature, the relative humidity, the air velocity, the metabolic rate and finally the clothing insulation [8]. These quantities can be measured or evaluated according to the Standards in the field of the Ergonomics of the Thermal Environment [22][23][24][25].…”
