Evaluation of the Nitric Oxide Radical Scavenging Activity of Manganese Complexes of Curcumin and Its Derivative

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO), a short-lived free radical generated endogenously, exerts influence on a number of functions including vasodilation, neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity and memory in the central nervous system. 1,2) Besides mediating normal function, NO has been implicated in pathophysiologic states. Overproduction of NO can mediate toxic effects, e.g. DNA fragmentation, cell damage and neuronal cell death.3) NO also shows neurotoxicity and acts as a pathological mediator in pathophysiological processes … Show more

“…Nitric oxide has many physiological functions including vasodilatation or synaptic plasticity in the central nervous system. On the other hand, the nitric oxide radical is implicated in pathogenesis of several diseases (Sumanont et al 2004). Nitric oxide belongs to reactive oxygen species (ROS) including free radicals such as superoxide anion (O 2 -) and hydroxyl radical species (OH•) (Wang et al 2009).…”

“…This NO can be oxidized quickly to produce a nitrite ion that can be detected with the Griess reagent [21] . The SNP powder was dissolved in phosphatebuffered saline (PBS), pH 7.4, to a concentration of 100 mmol/L.…”

“…The inhibition of cancer cell invasion by bDMC highlights its enhanced A c c e p t e d M a n u s c r i p t 4 antimetastasis potency [26]. The synthetic derivative DAC shows higher antibacterial activity against multiresistant bacteria [27] and a stronger nitric oxide (NO) and O 2 •-anion scavenging activity [28,29], although it has slightly lower apoptotic activity on AK-5 rat histiocytoma cells [30].…”
