Background Minimally invasive surgery is a rising trend in colorectal surgery and is on its way to becoming the gold standard due to the benefits it provides for patients. This study aims to test the efficacy for educational purposes by evaluating the videos published on YouTube ( www.youtube.com ) channel for low anterior resection procedure in rectum surgery. Methods We searched YouTube on October 17, 2020 to choose video clips that included relevant information about laparoscopic low anterior resection (LAR) for rectal cancer. Results We included 25 academics and 75 individual videos in this study. The teaching quality of the videos was evaluated according to academic and individual videos, and it was seen that the teaching quality scores of academic videos were higher and this result was statistically significant ( P = .03). The modified Laparoscopic Surgery Video Educational Guidelines (LAP-VEGaS) criteria were found that the score was higher in individual videos ( P = .014). The median Video Power Index (VPI) value was 1.50 (range .05-347) and the mean ratio was 7.01 ± 3.52. There was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups ( P = .443). Discussion Video-based surgical learning is an effective method for surgical education. Our study showed that the video quality and educational content of most of the videos about the low anterior resection procedure on YouTube were low. The videos of academic origin seem more valuable than individual videos. As far as video popularity is concerned, YouTube viewers are not selective. For this reason, training videos to be used for educational purposes must be passed through a standardized evaluation filter.

Evaluating YouTube Videos on Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation as a Resource for Patients

Objectives/Hypothesis This study evaluated the quality and comprehensiveness of YouTube videos on hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) for patients. This study also investigated the relationship between video content, video metrics, and popularity. Study Design Cross‐sectional study. Methods We identified 150 videos using three search terms: “inspire sleep apnea,” “hypoglossal nerve stimulation,” and “upper airway stimulation.” Videos that were unrelated to the use of HNS for obstructive sleep apnea in adults, operating room recordings, lectures for medical professionals, non‐English, or non‐audio were excluded. Video quality and comprehensiveness were assessed using modified DISCERN criterion (range: 5–25) and novel content criterion (range: 0–12), respectively. Secondary outcomes included video metrics (views, likes, dislikes, comments, and days since upload) and Video Power Index to measure popularity. Outcomes were stratified by video uploader source (medical institutions, medical companies, individual users, other). Results Users searched YouTube for “inspire sleep apnea” 2.48 times more in 2020 than in 2018. We identified 67 videos for review, with the majority coming from medical institutions (70.2%). Overall, the average‐modified DISCERN (13.65 ± 4.88) and novel content (3.87 ± 2.09) scores were low and did not differ between medical institutions or other uploader sources. Higher quality and more comprehensive video content did not correlate with popularity. Conclusion Overall quality and comprehensiveness of information of HNS YouTube videos was low. Given the high demand for information on HNS, there is opportunity for medical institutions to implement new strategies to improve both video content and visibility to patients. ObjectivesOnline educational platforms with open access have seen a growing adoption in the field of medical education. However, the extent of their global usage is still unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, our objective is to examine the usage patterns of two renowned open‐access resources in Otolaryngology. This includes identifying the most sought‐after topics and understanding the demographics of their users.MethodsRetrospective study of web analytics data between 2016 and 2021 extracted from the Headmirror.com and Mayo Clinic Otolaryngology YouTube channel platforms analyzing demographic and education topic trends via descriptive, geospatial, time‐series, t‐tests, and ANOVA analyses.ResultsViewership spanned 124 countries in 7 different geographic regions, with 72 countries comprising low‐ to middle‐income countries, mostly represented ages of 25–34 years old, came from high‐income countries rather than low‐income (p < .001), and used mobile phones followed by computers for device access. Video‐educational material comprised of subspecialty topics on Rhinology and Sinus Surgery (25%) at the highest end and Facial Trauma (1%) at the lowest. Controlling for the age of the video content, the most‐accessed videos comprised of subspecialty topics on Head and Neck Surgery at the highest end and Laryngology at the lowest with significant differentiation across topics of interest (p < .044).ConclusionsThis assessment of web‐analytics platforms from two widely used otolaryngology free, online‐access materials showed increasing global usage trends with significant differentiating factors along viewership demographics, as well as sought‐after subspecialty topics of interest. In turn, our results not only lay the groundwork for characterizing the global otolaryngology audience but also for future development of targeted educational materials and accessibility initiatives aimed at ameliorating global educational disparities in the field.
