At present time, China’s power systems face significant challenges in integrating large-scale renewable energy and reducing the curtailed renewable energy. In order to avoid the curtailment of renewable energy, the power systems need significant flexibility requirements in China. In regions where coal is still heavily relied upon for generating electricity, the flexible operations of coal power units will be the most feasible option to face these challenges. The study first focused on the reasons why the flexible operation of existing coal power units would potentially promote the integration of renewable energy in China and then reviewed the impacts on the performance levels of the units. A simple flexibility operation model was constructed to estimate the integration potential with the existing coal power units under several different scenarios. This study’s simulation results revealed that the existing retrofitted coal power units could provide flexibility in the promotion of the integration of renewable energy in a certain extent. However, the integration potential increment of 20% of the rated power for the coal power units was found to be lower than that of 30% of the rated power. Therefore, by considering the performance impacts of the coal power units with low performances in load operations, it was considered to not be economical for those units to operate at lower than 30% of the rated power. It was believed that once the capacity share of the renewable energy had achieved a continuously growing trend, the existing coal power units would fail to meet the flexibility requirements. Therefore, it was recommended in this study that other flexible resources should be deployed in the power systems for the purpose of reducing the curtailment of renewable energy. Furthermore, based on this study’s obtained evidence, in order to realize a power system with high proportions of renewable energy, China should strive to establish a power system with adequate flexible resources in the future.

An analysis of the current state of developments regarding the determination of the residual resource of transport structures and facilities, which are operated in the conditions of long-term practice, uncertainty and risk in the adoption of final conclusions, is given. It has been established that the strategy for the development of technical diagnostics requires the exclusion of dependence on the human factor and subjective observation of changes in the physical, mechanical and operational properties of controlled objects for intellectual operations of determining the remaining resource associated with the collection, processing and analysis of diagnostic information. Analysis of the use of methods of non-destructive testing and flaw detection to assess the residual resource of transport structures and ratios showed the limitations of these methods of determining defects in the early stages of their development, which precede the state of degradation of the material, optimization of processes and technologies to ensure timely diagnosis and forecasting of the technical condition of structures. The current state of developments regarding the determination of the residual resource of transport structures and structures operated under conditions of complex dynamic loads is considered. The structuring of the main directions of research was carried out and the gradation of the main used methods of residual resource assessment was proposed based on the results of numerical methods of fracture mechanics, based on the results of non-destructive testing and defectoscopy, using normative documents and standards of modeling and information support. The essence, methodology of dignity and shortcomings of the used methods are highlighted. Purpose, scope of application, prospects of their further use in transport technologies are determined. Applying the laws of thermodynamics, a general energy approach is formulated to study the delayed fracture of structural materials under the action of force load (static, cyclic, shunting mode of its change), high temperatures, hydrogen-corrosive media, neutron irradiation. Based on the energy approach process, models and forecasting methods of residual resource of structural elements in the mentioned operating conditions are developed. Based on the energy approach and the basic concepts of the acoustic-emission method, the calculation models in the parameters of the AE signals for the analytical description of the materials and structural elements delayed fracture under exploitation conditions are developed. Residual resource of the elements of power equipment (steam pipeline, elements of steam turbines), oil and gas pipelines, elements of nuclear power plants and the body of the oil hydrocracking reactor, is calculated.
