Evaluation of ultrasonic estimates of carcass fat thickness and longissimus muscle area in beef cattle

Abstract: Yearling crossbred feedlot steers (n = 495) and heifers (n = 151) were ultrasonically measured at the 12-13th rib interface 24 h before slaughter to evaluate the accuracy of ultrasonic measurements of fat thickness (BFU) and longissimus muscle area (LMAU) for prediction of actual carcass measures. Isonification was with an Aloka 210DX ultrasound unit equipped with a 12.5-cm, 3.0-MHz, linear array transducer by two technicians. Carcass fat thickness (BFC) and longissimus muscle area (LMAC) were measured 48 h po… Show more

“…A média da EDEV indicou diferença absoluta média de 0,34 mm entre a EGSUS e EGSC. Esse valor é inferior aos resultados obtidos por Duello (1992), Perkins et al(1992b), Charagu et al (2000 e Greiner et al (2003), de 2,3; 1,9; 2,2 e 1,38 mm, respectivamente.…”

“…However, genetic evaluation for these attributes in breeding animals is generally difficult and expensive. Use of real-time ultrasound scanning for eye muscle area and fat thickness as a predictor of saleable beef yield is an effective tool for genetic evaluation of carcass quantity in young animals (Perkins et al 1992;Robinson et al 1993;Bergen et al 1996;Moser et al 1998). Ultrasonography is also potentially useful for genetic evaluation of intramuscular fat (marbling) in young animals, particularly in heifers or steer half-sibs (Wilson et al 1998).…”

“…Many researchers reported that accuracy of ultrasonic measured subcutan fat thickness and REA is quite good (BRETHOUR 1990, DUELLO et al 1990, SMITH et al 1992, PERKINS et al 1992a, PERKINS et al 1992b, WALDNER et al 1992, BRETHOUR 1992, ROBINSON 1992, RÖSLER et al 1996, MAY et al 2000, GREINER et al 2003. HARTJEN et al (1993) investigated a total of 648 young bulls of different breeds just before slaughter.…”
