Evaluation of value stream mapping (VSM) applicability to the oil and gas chain processes

Abstract: Purpose Lean approach has overcome the boundaries of the automotive and manufacturing industry and has achieved many different sectors of the economy, including services. In this context, this paper aims to investigate the applicability of value stream mapping (VSM) tool in processes of the oil and gas chain. Also, this paper investigates if there is a specific framework currently being used by organizations belonging to this chain to map the value stream of its processes. Design/methodology/approach A detai… Show more

“…Many tools and practices are used to foster the culture of waste reduction and continuous improvement in the lean philosophy, such as value stream mapping (VSM), which is the focus of this study. Authors such as Lobo et al (2020) and Marin-Garcia et al (2021) considered VSM as one of the most fundamental tools of lean philosophy as it is when it started being adopted. Ramani and Ksd (2019) stated that VSM is one of the lean tools that has a high potential for identifying and revealing waste in a process.…”

“…This tool, by Rother and Shook (1998), takes into account both the material and information flow and helps a great deal in the process of visualizing the current scenario and creating a future situation. Therefore, VSM can be an important tool to help companies understand their processes, eliminate waste and make desired future improvements (Lobo et al , 2020; Ramani and Ksd, 2019).…”

“…Previous studies have reviewed the VAM technique either on the side of the application or capability. The first group including [6] reviewed VSM implementation in food losses and waste in the supply chain, [7] and [8] in the manufacturing industry, [9] in cross-sector, [10] in the service industry, [11] in healthcare service, and [12] in oil and gas chain processes. Otherwise, the second group including [5] reviewed the difficulties and limitations of VMS mainly in constructing the current state map), [13] discussed the stochastic analysis of the value stream, and 13] extended the VSM analysis into the smart sustainable development.…”

“…Value Stream Mapping (VSM): Vasconcelos Ferreira Lobo et al [8] define that this lean tool helps diagram material and information flows to identify waste and activities that do not generate value in the analyzed process. It also allows companies to obtain the desired results by systematically capturing and analyzing data.…”
