Evaluation the Moisture Susceptibility of Asphalt Mixtures Containing Demolished Concrete Waste Materials

Abstract: The distress of moisture induced damage in flexible pavement received tremendous attention over the past decades. The harmful effects of this distress expand the deterioration of other known distresses such as rutting and fatigue cracking. This paper focused on the efficiency of using the waste material of demolished concrete to prepare asphalt mixtures that can withstand the effect of moisture in the pavement. For this purpose, different percentages of waste demolished concrete (0, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70 and 100)… Show more

“…In addition, these mechanisms made the HA more durable and moisture-resistant against water-mediated damages. In brief, the in poration of RWF into the HAMs was affirmed to be an innovative strategy in achiev excellent moisture susceptibility desirable for high-performance pavement construct It was acknowledged that [1], by replacing a part of the coarse aggregates with RCAs IRS values of the asphalt mixes can be enhanced appreciably. In contrast, our results agreed with this claim and this may be due to the difference in the treatment proces RCAs.…”

“…In recent years, with rapid changes in socio-economic and cultural affairs in Iraq, the number of road vehicles has been substantially increased. Consequently, Iraqi highways have been receiving immense loads due to there being no alternatives within the transportation sector for people and commodities to utilize for travel [1]. In Iraq, highways are often adversely affected by various factors because they are mostly made of asphalt concrete pavement.…”

“…Construction waste incorporates a variety of components, but Portland cement concrete pieces are among the most important elements [17]. Recycling concrete aggregate would minimize landfill area and prevent soil and plants from deteriorating when used in asphaltic concrete mixtures instead of virgin aggregate [18], [19].…”

“…As a consequence of the world's rapid population growth and industrialization over the last century, in addition, several current pavements have already reached the end of their useful lives, and others will soon need maintenance due to high traffic volumes and environmental alterations [11]. New construction and maintenance works lead to an increase in the demand for raw materials that form asphalt mixtures, which leads to an increase in their cost in addition to the environmental damage resulting from the destruction of natural lands [12], [13]. The excessive accumulation of construction waste, however, is another important and dangerous issue affecting the environment.…”
