Evapotranspiration Estimates Derived Using Multi-Platform Remote Sensing in a Semiarid Region

Abstract: Evapotranspiration (ET) is a key component of the water balance, especially in arid and semiarid regions. The current study takes advantage of spatially-distributed, near real-time information provided by satellite remote sensing to develop a regional scale ET product derived from remotely-sensed observations. ET is calculated by scaling PET estimated from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products with downscaled soil moisture derived using the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite… Show more

“…However, to provide error measures consistent with those reported for the MODIS ET product, the tower measurements (ET obs ) are compared to gridded ET LST estimates directly [18,19]. Although the tower footprint areas (e.g.,~100's m 2 to~1's km 2 ) are less than the simulated ET LST pixel area (~25 km 2 ) and there are often energy balance closure problems associated with tower measurements [33,72,73], the tower-based estimates are applied uniformly over the pixel area. Thus, in this study, the flux tower measurements of ET obs (i.e., LE/λ yielding ET obs in units of mm/d for the associated footprint area) are compared directly to simulated ET LST (i.e., ET LST in mm/day for the pixel containing the tower location), for consistency with Mu, et al [19].…”

“…It consists of soil evaporation and vegetation transpiration from land surfaces into the atmosphere, as well as the evaporation of canopy interception and surface water [2]. ET is fundamental to water balance in natural environments, particularly in semi-arid and arid regions where ecosystem processes are often impacted by the limited availability of water and where water loss is dominated by ET [3,4]. In urban environments, ET plays an essential role in alleviating urban heat island effect and regulating urban climate [5].…”
