Evidence for Interfacial Halogen Bonding

Abstract: Ahomologous series of donor-p-acceptor dyes was synthesized,d iffering only in the identity of the halogen substituents about the triphenylamine (TPA; donor) portion of each molecule.E ach Dye-X (X = F, Cl, Br,a nd I) was immobilized on aT iO 2 surface to investigate how the halogen substituents affect the reaction between the light-induced charge-separated state,T iO 2 (e À )/Dye-X + ,w ith iodide in solution. Transient absorption spectroscopys howed progressively faster reactivity towards nucleophilic iodide… Show more

“…Improvements in iodide oxidation at the power point are hence expected to result in higher DSSC efficiency. For this reason, sensitizers with high cationic charge, open coordination sites for iodide ligation, or halogen bonding functionalities have been designed to enhance the local iodide concentration at the TiO 2 interface through adduct formation between iodide and the sensitizer. …”

“…A family of four donor−π–acceptor sensitizers were synthesized for comparative halogen binding studies, Figure . The carbon–halogen bond was positioned proximate to the triphenylamine donor which, after excited-state injection, was the expected site of halide oxidation.…”
