Evidence for multiple drivers of aerial insectivore declines in North America

Abstract: Aerial insectivores (birds that forage on aerial insects) have experienced significant population declines in North America. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed for these declines, but current evidence suggests multiple factors could be operating in combination during their annual migratory cycles between breeding and nonbreeding areas. Potential drivers include decreased prey abundance, direct or indirect impacts of environmental contaminants, habitat loss, phenological changes due to warming climate, and … Show more

“…We advocate formal consideration of nutrition in the conservation and management of species. While it is generally recognized that food availability is an important component of suitable habitat, understanding prey quality and distribution formally in terms of ‘nutritional landscapes’ could aid in animal conservation ( Twining et al , 2016b , 2018a ; Rubin et al , 2019 ; Spiller and Dettmers, 2019 ). Our study shows the importance of conserving high-quality lakeshore habitats and supporting productive aquatic insect emergences.…”

“…They equally constitute vital food sources for numerous vertebrates and underpin the functioning and integrity of entire ecosystems. Calls for more robust and better datasets, longer time horizons or a more exhaustive analysis of the underlying drivers should not be an excuse for delaying or refraining from action on an urgent issue that is essential for the survival of the world's ecosystems (Spiller and Dettmers 2019; Harvey et al . 2020).…”

“…Arrizabalaga‐Escudero et al, 2019; Vesterinen et al, 2016). As many arthropodivorous vertebrates, particularly birds and bats, are currently threatened due to habitat loss, arthropod declines and disease, among other factors (Nebel et al, 2010; O'Shea et al, 2016; Rioux Paquette et al, 2014; Spiller & Dettmers, 2019), fully characterizing their resource requirements also represents a timely endeavour.…”
