Evidence of porcine circovirus-like virus P1 in piglets with an unusual congenital tremor

Abstract: Outbreaks of trembling and shaking were reported among pigs at two pig farms in Jiangsu Province, China. Serum and tissue samples tested positive for porcine circovirus-like virus P1 and negative for classical swine fever virus, porcine circovirus type 2, astrovirus and porcine pestivirus using PCR/RT-PCR and immunohistochemical techniques. High P1 viral genome loads were identified in sera, brain and lymph node tissue samples by qPCR. In addition, one of the most notable pathological changes was dissolution o… Show more

“…PMWS, Aujeszky’s disease, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), aflatoxicosis, classical and African swine fever. Since Sweden has active surveillance programs and are deemed free from for Aujeszky’s disease, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) as well as classical and African swine fever, and PMWS (PCV-2) not are supposed to cause congenital tremor [ 30 – 33 ] we speculate that APPV is a causative agent of congenital tremor in Swedish piglets as well as in other countries [ 34 – 36 ].…”

“…Porcine circovirus‐like virus P1 has been detected in piglet herds in China and may cause clinical diseases, including PMWS and CT (Wen, He, Xiao et al., ; Wen, Mao, Jiao et al., ). In this study, 140 of 500 (28.0%) serum samples from 25 PMWS‐affected farms in seven cities of Hebei Province tested positive for P1 with PCR.…”

“…The P1 virus can infect several animals, including pigs, cattle, goats and rabbits, and is considered the aetiological agent of PMWS and congenital tremor (CT) (Wen, He, Xiao et al., ; Wen, He, Yu et al., ; Wen, Mao, Fan et al., ; Wen, Mao, Jiao et al. ).…”

“…Since 2016, the etiology of CT A-II has been attributed to the newly described APPV, which has already been demonstrated by experimental infections [2,10]. Other viruses also were detected coinfection with APPV, such as porcine circovirus type 2 [11], astrovirus [12], porcine circovirus type 3 [13], linda virus [14], porcine circovirus-like virus P1 [15], and Teschovirus A [16], however, the role played by these three viruses as the primary cause of CT A-II is debatable.…”
