Evolution of the Annealing Twin Density during δ-Supersolvus Grain Growth in the Nickel-Based Superalloy Inconel™ 718

Abstract: Abstract:Grain growth experiments were performed on Inconel™ 718 to investigate the possible correlation of the annealing twin density with grain size and with annealing temperature. Those experiments were conducted at different temperatures in the δ supersolvus domain and under such conditions that only capillarity forces were involved in the grain boundary migration process. In the investigated range, there is a strong inverse correlation of the twin density with the average grain size. On the other hand, th… Show more

“…Here the twin density is proportionally increasing with grain size from 1 h to 3 h during which the rate of recrystallization was so high. However, once recrystallization is close to completion (after 3 h of ST), the rate of twin evolution reduced tremendously, which is in agreement with literature [12,17,19]. For the samples ST for 3 to 24 h, the trend line shows a decreasing tendency of twin density as grain size increases.…”

“…For the samples ST for 3 to 24 h, the trend line shows a decreasing tendency of twin density as grain size increases. Two possible mechanisms are stated by Yuan and co-authors [19] to show the inverse correlation between twin density and average grain size. Smaller grains contain several twin boundaries that could be consumed by bigger grains during grain growth, that clearly reduce the number of twins.…”

“…Based on twin topologies, Bozzolo et al [62] divided the annealing twins into grain growth twins and recrystallization twins. Jin et al [63] conducted studies on the twin density evolution in case of conventional manufactured IN 718, and they maintained that the recrystallization twins are controlled by the propagation of the pre-existing twins of growing grains. As AM IN 625 is characterized by a great microstructural texture in the as-built state, the presence of growing twins is possible and it could influence the density of recrystallization twins.…”
