Evolutionary history of zoogeographical regions surrounding the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: The Tibetan Plateau (TP) and surrounding regions have one of the most complex biotas on Earth. However, the evolutionary history of these regions in deep time is poorly understood. Here, we quantify the temporal changes in beta dissimilarities among zoogeographical regions during the Cenozoic using 4,966 extant terrestrial vertebrates and 1,278 extinct mammal genera. We identify ten present-day zoogeographical regions and find that they underwent a striking change over time. Specifically, the fauna on the TP w… Show more

“…the nearest taxon index; Faith's phylogenetic diversity), the NRI provided more information on the basal structure of the phylogenetic tree (i.e. deeper evolutionary dynamics; Webb, Ackerly, McPeek, & Donoghue, 2002), which makes it better suited for inferring the assembly processes on the TP as its fauna underwent a striking change during the Cenozoic period (He et al, 2020). The NRI tests the significance of the observed pattern and calculates the standardized effect size of the mean pairwise phylogenetic distance (MPD) between all species with respect to null expectations generated by randomly selecting species across the tips of the phylogeny (999 runs).NRIsamplegoodbreak=goodbreak−1goodbreak×MPDsampleMPDrnsamplesd)(MPDrnsamplePositive NRI values indicate phylogenetic clustering, whereas negative values indicate phylogenetic overdispersion.…”

“…Grid-based analyses used the R packages raster (Hijmans, 2021) and sf (Pebesma, 2018). We excluded grid cells with fewer than 5 species to control for the negative influence of low species richness in the analysis (He et al, 2020). Ultimately, we obtained 4527 grid assemblages representing 711 species (36 species were not included due to insufficient occurrence data in our study area, Table S1.1 and Figure S2.4).…”

“…As such, species endemic to the TP are expected to have colonized from surrounding regions followed by vicariant speciation and diversification (Päckert et al., 2020; Wen et al., 2014). However, given that strong reconfiguration of the geographical setting and atmospheric circulation have profoundly altered the biota on the TP over the past 50 Myr (He et al., 2020; Mosbrugger et al., 2018), the origins of these species and their time of arrival on the TP remain unclear.…”
