Purpose Despite the formal establishment of the Health Support Pharmacy system, few community pharmacies have transitioned to this new designation in Japan. Moreover, patients’ perspectives on the usefulness of health-support pharmacies and community pharmacies have not yet been investigated. In this work, we investigated patients’ attitudes, opinions, and awareness as users of member pharmacies of the Japan Federation of Democratic Medical Institutions (Min-Iren), with respect to two essential functions provided by community pharmacies—primary care and health support—to identify modern challenges facing community pharmacies. Methods Regular visitors to participating Min-Iren community pharmacies were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire. Responses were compared between users of health-support pharmacies and other pharmacy types, as well as between members and non-members of “collaborating organizations” (CO). CO is organizational partners of Min-Iren whose activities support affiliated facilities. Logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the predictive value of different factors on pharmacies’ primary-care and health-support functionality. Results A total of 181 Min-Iren community pharmacies (51.7%: 181/350) participated in this study, and most patients answered the questionnaire (97.7%, n=2623). Relatively few patients recognized the term “Health Support Pharmacy” (12.2%). CO members tended to have a superior understanding of a wide variety of services provided by CPs as compared to non-members. Statistically significant predictors of primary-care and health-support functionality included male gender, having a primary-care pharmacist, age ≥60 years, recognition of the term “Health Support Pharmacy” and CO membership. Conclusion CO members, a class of patients with a superior awareness of health promotion, demonstrated a good understanding of the variety of services provided by community pharmacies and tended to positively rate their pharmacy. Moving forward, efforts to raise awareness about the importance of health-promotional activities among community pharmacy users should further reinforce the primary-care and health-support functions of community pharmacies.

In this study, we conducted a web-based survey of 800 elderly people to clarify sex and regional diŠerences in the usefulness of individual health consultations in community pharmacies for improving the health of elderly people. The results demonstrated that the health consultations were more useful for those with high health consciousness than those with low health consciousness and men living alone had the greatest need for health consultations. Among residents of urban areas,``physical activity and exercise'' aŠected the usefulness of the health consultations for both men and women. In contrast, among residents of rural areas,``nutrition and dietary habits'' aŠected the usefulness of the health consultations for both men and women. These results demonstrate that individual health consultations with elderly people focus on problems other than the side eŠects of medications. Therefore, it is expected that such consultations will continue to contribute substantially to the health of residents in the future. It is necessary for pharmacies to provide consultations on a more diverse range of issues and to be recognized by residents as providers of medical advice in the community.

In recent years, pharmacists have shifted their approach from a non-personal to an interpersonal one, with communication skills becoming essential for their daily work. It is not clear how much high school students, at the age at which they have to plan their careers, are aware of pharmacistsʼ work. The purpose of this study was to clarify the perception of pharmacists among high school students and guardians, which may in uence their career paths. In July 2020, an online survey involving 300 high school students and 300 guardians of the students was conducted to examine their perception of pharmacists. The survey included questions about the image of pharmacists (hospital and community pharmacists separately), their tasks, need for knowledge, importance of aptitude, and need for communication. Both high school students and guardians had low awareness of interpersonal work such as consultation other than medicine (46.0％ -52.0％), home visitation (30.7％-44.0％), and multidisciplinary cooperation of community pharmacists (39.7％-45.3％). Moreover, they did not consider that the job particularly required communication skills. It is suggested that pharmacists should make efforts to raise the awareness of high school students and guardians about the pharmacy profession and actively engage with patients, their families, and the community.
