Examining the Potential of Developing and Implementing Use of Adiponectin-Targeted Therapeutics for Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases

Abstract: Cardiometabolic diseases encompass those affecting the heart and vasculature as well as other metabolic problems, such as insulin resistance, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. These diseases tend to have common risk factors, one of which is impaired adiponectin action. This may be due to reduced bioavailability of the hormone or resistance to its effects on target tissues. A strong negative correlation between adiponectin levels and cardiometabolic diseases has been well-documented and research … Show more

“…Cardiometabolic diseases encompass a set of dysfunctions affecting the cardiovascular system. These are not limited to hard cardiovascular events such as coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke, but also include cardiovascular risk factors, namely obesity, insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, lipid profile, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, among others [134].…”

“…Several short peptides and small molecules have been identified today to target AdipoRs and mimic some of ApN effects. These receptor agonists can induce similar downstream signaling cascades to ApN, such as AMPK, p38MAPK, and PPARα [120] (Table 1).…”

“…Additional AdipoR activating peptides have also been identified in silico [120]. Pep70 is a potential AdipoR1 agonist and could significantly inhibit the proliferation of cells and suppress the expression of collagen type I alpha1 and TGF-β1, thus protecting against fibrotic responses [133].…”
