Example study for granular bioreactor stratification: Three-dimensional evaluation of a sulfate-reducing granular bioreactor

Abstract: Recently, sulfate-reducing granular sludge has been developed for application in sulfate-laden water and wastewater treatment. However, little is known about biomass stratification and its effects on the bioprocesses inside the granular bioreactor. A comprehensive investigation followed by a verification trial was therefore conducted in the present work. The investigation focused on the performance of each sludge layer, the internal hydrodynamics and microbial community structures along the height of the react… Show more

“…Despite this, due to the design complexity and high capital cost, the two-stage reactors are not preferred in many real applications and, alternatively, the design optimization of a single stage reactor towards maximizing VFA reduction have been given special attention. Installing baffles at various levels of a granular bed reactor [243] and employing membrane bioreactors [244] are some of the examples identified to have promising results in accelerated degradation of VFAs. Nevertheless, the future research on either reducing the cost of a multistage reactor or incorporating more advanced features to single stage reactors on optimal utilization of VFAs for improving AD efficiency is desirable.…”

“…Comamonas has been often reported to be the one of the primary colonizers that readily form cell aggregates and colonizes on biotic and abiotic substrata in wastewater (Andersson, Kuttuva Rajarao et al 2008, Luo, Xu et al 2012, Kim, Pagaling et al 2014, Hao, Luo et al 2016. Interestingly, Comamonas isolates from wastewater treatment plants and bioreactors rarely form flocs in synthetic wastewater media.…”

“…São capazes também de realizar reações de oxidação incompleta de compostos orgânicos e dessulfonação utilizando ácido lático como co-substrato (Vos et al, 2009;Hao et al, 2016). O gênero Desulfovibrio foi reportado com abundância relativa significativa (acima de 1%) por Okada et al (2013), e em menores porcentagem por Delforno et al (2015), Carosia et al (2014), Macedo et al (2015) e Andrade et al (2017).…”
