Summary Conceptual design and modeling of novel‐integrated process configurations for helium extraction and natural gas liquefaction is investigated. Mixed fluid cascade (MFC) refrigeration system is considered for providing the needed refrigeration in the natural liquefaction section. Using an absorption refrigeration system as the precooling cycle is investigated in one of the introduced processes. Integrated flash and distillation method is used for helium extraction. Purity of the extracted crude helium is 50% (mole). Process streams operational condition and specifications of the devices are presented and explained. Composite curves of the heat exchangers demonstrate that thermal design has been done properly. Ratio of the power consumption to the produced liquefied natural gas (LNG) of the MFC process is 0.265 kWh per kg LNG and applying absorption refrigeration system instead of the pre‐cooling cycle decreases it to 0.1849 kWh per kg LNG. For the modified process with absorption refrigeration system helium extraction rate and power consumption ratio are 0.951 and 132.9 (kWh/[kgmole Helium]) respectively. Exergy method is applied on the under consideration processes. The results show that the compressors have the highest rate of exergy destruction among the other process equipment. An extensive economic analysis is done on the proposed processes. The results show that prime cost of the product (US$/kg LNG) for MFC and modified MFC processes are 0.1939 and 0.2069, respectively. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is done based on the economic factors such as electrical energy price and prime cost of the product.

This case study analyzes a cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) with a production of V˙O2=58300 [m3Nh] of gaseous oxygen with a concentration greater than 98.5%, operating in Romania on a steel plant platform. The goal of the paper is to provide an extensive model of exergetic analysis that could be used in an optimization procedure when decisional parameters are changed or structural design modifications are implemented. For each key part of the Air Separation Unit, an exergetic product and fuel were defined and, based on their definition, the coefficient of performance of each functional zone was calculated. The information about the magnitude of the exergetic losses offers solutions for their future recovery. The analysis of the exergy destructions suggests when it is worth making a larger investment. The exergetic analysis of the compression area of the ASU points out an exergy destruction and loss of 37% from the total plant’s electrical energy input. The exergy loss with the heat transferred to the cooling system of compressors can be recovered; for the exergy destruction portion, the challenge between investment and operating costs should be considered. The exergy destruction of the air separation columns found the High Pressure Column (HPC) to be more destructive than the Low Pressure Column. The share of the exergy destruction in the total plant’s electrical energy input is 8.3% for the HPC. The local COP of the HPC, calculated depending on the total exergy of the local product and fuel, is 62.66%. The calculus of the air separation column is performed with the ChemSep simulator.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of combined cycle power plants in full and part-load operations in terms of energy, exergy and environment. The environmental analysis is performed using life cycle assessment method. Two different strategies are selected to control the gas turbine under part-load conditions, including Turbine Exhaust Temperature (TET) constant and Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT) constant modes. Results show that gas turbine has a higher efficiency in TET constant mode. But, combined cycle shows a better efficiency in TIT constant mode. Exergy analysis results show that combustion chamber has the highest rate of exergy destruction, both in full and part-load operation. With reducing the load, total exergy destruction of the plant is decreased which is due to lower fuel consumption. Also reducing the load by 50% leads to 2.47% and 6.36% reduction in exergy efficiency of the plant in TIT and TET constant modes, respectively. Therefore, in terms of energy and exergy, it is suggested to use the TIT constant mode for part-load operation of the gas turbine within a combined cycle. But in terms of environmental analysis, results show that more emissions are produced in TIT constant mode, due to higher fuel consumption.
