Any effort with the aim of increasing the total electrical power generation (EPG) due to the existed constraints in vessels is desired in power plants. Using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) for recovering waste heat of an exhausting gas is considered as an auxiliary way for improving EPG value. In this study, four ORC arrangements were first modeled for six refrigerants by EES software and the first and second laws of thermodynamics efficiency (ηI and ηII, respectively) and mass flow rate were studied for these cycles. Based on modeling results, the best arrangement was selected for each refrigerant such as; F‐type (Reference cycle+ Intermediate recuperator+ Final recuperator) for R123, H‐type (Reference cycle+ Intermediate recuperator) for R114 and n‐butane and R‐type (Reference cycle + Final recuperator) for n‐pentane, n‐heptane, and toluene. The ηI value as a technical objective function was then optimized for the above cycles by Aspen HYSYS. n‐heptane and toluene cycles were chosen due to higher first‐law efficiency value and then were studied under different source temperature condition and n‐heptane cycle showed better adaptability. Afterward, exergoeconomic was applied on n‐heptane cycle and maximum cycle pressure was chosen as a design variable for economically optimizing net final income (NFI). Finally, NFI value is increased from 423.1$/kW·h to 609.9$/kW·h about 44.2%, while the second‐law efficiency value is just decreased from 25.6% to 20.6% about 5%.

In this study, a basic organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is introduced in an air separation process for waste heat recovery. Conventional and advanced exergy analyses are adopted to investigate the thermodynamic properties of components in the ORC. A comprehensive thermodynamic model is constructed to improve the advanced exergy analysis in the ORC, thereby encompassing real, theoretical, unavoidable, and hybrid cycles. Nine organic working fluids are introduced to investigate the influence on the ORC performance. ( 1) The conventional exergy analysis reveals the following: (a) The expander constantly demonstrates the maximum exergy efficiency except when R227ea is used. (b) The evaporator constantly exhibits the maximum exergy destruction regardless of the working fluid used. (c) The maximum product exergy is obtained when R114 is used. (d) Key components must focus on the condenser and evaporator to improve the ORC performance.(2) The advanced exergy analysis reveals that the expander demonstrates maximum potential for improvement because its endogenous avoidable exergy destruction accounts for approximately 90% of its real exergy destruction for all working fluids. The expander must be improved to achieve the optimal ORC performance. The advanced exergy analysis can distinguish the source of exergy destruction and the magnitude for possible improvement via the proposed thermodynamic model in this study. The comprehensive thermodynamic model can promote the investigation of the advanced exergy analysis in the ORC.Applying conventional and advanced exergy analyses to investigate the thermodynamic performance of a system or its components is highly recommended.

Waste heat recovery (WHR) system uses the thermal energy from the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine (ICE) to assist in the electricity generated by the ICE generator in buildings. This paper presents a model predictive control (MPC) framework to minimize the fuel consumption of an ICE by integrating it with a WHR system. To this end, a control oriented model of a WHR system is developed and then integrated to a control oriented model of a turbocharged dual fuel diesel‐natural gas ICE. The ICE model is derived based on experimental data collected from a 6.7 L Cummins ISB engine modified for dual fuel operation. The designed MPC framework optimizes the ICE combustion, turbocharger, and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system in the WHR to minimize fuel consumption of the ICE. The designed control framework also allows to meet time‐varying exhaust gas temperature requirements of the ICE to meet exhaust emission constraints. The results show that the optimal operation of the WHR and the ICE reduces the fuel consumption of the ICE by 6.7%.
