Existing differences between available lists of FODMAP containing foods

Abstract: Background and aim: Reduced intake of fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, and monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) is useful to treat functional gastrointestinal disorders. However, there is no consensus on which foods should be included in the list of FODMAP, due to the lack of FODMAP-profiles characterization of many different foods. This study aimed to emphasize the need to unify the FODMAP lists to prevent patients' confusion. We hypothesized the lists of FODMAP do not comprise all products that c… Show more

“…In 2017, McMeans et al found discrepancies among three commonly used U.S.-based low FODMAP food lists, with an overlap of less than 50% in listed foods [154]. Martin et al more recently reported that 22.6% of the 204 foods listed varied in classification across the 10 studies included [155]. Although the low FODMAP diet has demonstrated efficacy in individuals with IBS, particularly in the short term, the optimal threshold for achieving a total reduction in FODMAPs is yet to be determined.…”

“…Low‐FODMAP diet decreases total bacteria abundance, such as decreasing Bifidobacteria , Ruminococcus gnavus , Clostridium , F. prausnitzii , and Akkermansia . Low‐FODMAP diet has been used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS; Guagnozzi et al, 2012 ; Martín et al, 2022 ; Mazzawi et al, 2013 ; Nanayakkara et al, 2016 ; Ostgaard et al, 2012 ; Rinninella, Cintoni, et al, 2019 ).…”

“…FODMAP occurs naturally in various foods that contain oligosaccharides and disaccharides (e.g., dairy products), such as fructans (e.g., garlic and onion), galacto-oligosaccharides (e.g., vegetables), and monosaccharides (e.g., honey), but also polyols used as sweeteners (e.g., sorbitol, mannitol, and xylitol). The amount of FODMAP is dependent on the species and the maturity of the product [ 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ].…”
