Exogenous ascorbic acid scarcely ameliorates inhibition of photosynthesis in rice leaves by O3

Abstract: The role of ascorbic acid on acute O 3 -induced inhibition of photosynthesis in solution-cultured paddy rice was evaluated. As pre-treatment, ascorbic acid (0, 5, and 10 mM) was added to the culture solution for 5 d before 5 h of O 3 exposure (0, .1, and .3 cm 3 m −3 O 3 ) during daytime. O 3 decreased photosynthesis-related parameters, total ascorbic acid content, and the redox state (RDS) of ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid treatment enhanced the total ascorbic acid contents and its RDS level of rice leaves, but… Show more

“…AsA is one of the most abundant water‐soluble antioxidants in plants and acts as a key regulator in growth and development (Hossain et al, 2018 ), and abiotic (Billah et al, 2017 ; Farooq et al, 2013 ; Kobayakawa & Imai, 2017 ; Wang et al, 2017 ; Xu & Huang, 2018 ) as well as biotic stress tolerance (Boubakri, 2018 ; Egan et al, 2007 ; Fujiwara et al, 2013 ; Li et al, 2016 ). Oxidation of AsA is an important event in the stress‐induced AsA:DHA cycle, catalysed by the enzymes ascorbate oxidase (AO) and APX (Green & Fry, 2005 ; Stevens et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Ascorbate can be exogenously applied as a foliage application, seed treatment, and co-treatment for the alleviation of stress-induced damages [181]. Many researchers reported about the supplemental AsA-mediated antioxidant defense regulation in various plant species under different stressors, such as salt stress [182], drought [183], extreme temperature [184], ozone [185], and heavy metal stress [186].…”

“…AsA can be absorbed into plants and increase endogenous AsA content. Exogenous application of AsA plays an important role in many plants exposed to different types of abiotic stresses, including salinity [13], drought [14], heat [15], osmotic [16], and ozone [17]. AsA has been used to ameliorate abiotic stresses, and studies that improve plant growth under salt stress are the most common.…”
