Exogenous determinants of entrepreneurial intuition and the mediatory role of psychological capital among potential youth entrepreneurs

Abstract: Some scholars have argued that intuition should be given more importance in scholarly research but not many researchers have investigated intuition in entrepreneurial settings. This study therefore investigated the influence of career adaptability, ambiguity tolerance, achievement need and mentoring support on entrepreneurial intuition and the mediatory role of psychological capital. The quantitative study employed an ex-post facto research design via cross-sectional survey among 1626 youth corps members acros… Show more

“…The absence of necessary supportive infrastructure such as company incubators or entrepreneurship development centers makes it difficult for rural women entrepreneurs to connect with others who share their interests and access essential business services needed for peer learning or knowledge sharing (Mohamad & Ariffin, 2018;Khatibi & Daud, 2019). Malaysia's rural regions suffer from a deficiently developed infrastructure resulting in frequent hardships such as poor communication networks or restricted availability of public transport (Noor & Ismail, 2017). Connecting with clients and getting raw materials can be challenging for rural women entrepreneurs because of the restrictions they face which limit their access to market information.…”

“…Establishing their own businesses is a challenge for rural Malaysian women due to various socio-cultural factors. Cultural conventions sometimes prevent women from owning businesses or pursuing careers outside of the home due to prescribed gender roles (Noor & Ismail, 2017;Saleh & Shamsudin, 2017). Discouraged by traditional gender norms that prioritise domestic responsibilities, many people hold onto prejudices and preconceptions causing them to believe that women must focus on household duties exclusively instead of pursuing career options (Omar & Shahzad, 2016).…”

“…Nonetheless, Umukoro and Okurame (2017) were both of the opinion that though entrepreneurism may be useful in generating employment and technological development, this perceived success may sometimes rely upon intuitive ability of entrepreneurs to make business decisions under accelerating and overwhelmed business situations. As it were, numerous authors have implicated various variables in entrepreneurial behavior.…”

“…While the left hemisphere of the brain is associated with a linear processing of information in sequence that is mainly accountable for rational or 'analytical' thinking, the right hemisphere of the brain on its own conforms to a unified, simultaneous treatment of numerous inputs, a way of thinking typically used for spatial orientation or understanding of visual images cognitive style that is indicated as 'intuition' (Castellano, Maalaoui, Safraou & Reymond, 2014). Conversely, quite a lot of studies have underscore the necessity to conduct more in-depth analysis on the conceptualisation of intuition and how not only executives but also entrepreneurs can use it in an efficient and clever way during the course of decision making that they face regularly (Malewska, 2018;Umukoro & Okurame 2017;Sadler-Smith & Shefy, 2004;Hodgkinson et al, 2009).This assertion was also supported by Kickul, Gundry, Barbosa, andWhitcanack (2009, 2010) when they asserted that persons with intuitive cognitive approach are known to have a higher self-belief in their personal capacity to investigate and identify opportunities wherever they may be (searching phase),…”
