Experiment-based modelling of the mechanical behaviour of non-hazardous waste incineration bottom ashes treated by hydraulic binder

Abstract: Instrumented indentation tests have been carried out on an isolated 25 mm diameter particle of Non-Hazardous Waste Incineration bottom ash. These tests have enabled one to assess the intrinsic mean reduced modulus of elasticity “Er” of the particles. This result is used as input data for a 3D numerical model of Representative Elementary Volumes (REV) of a road gravel made with this kind of by-products. This numerical model is based on a multi-scale hierarchical modelling strategy. The aggregates treated with c… Show more

“…These are: three successive "loading-unloading" phases, a loading phase held constant for 100s and an unloading phase during which the reduced elastic modulus "Er" is determined. The principle of instrumented indentation and calculation method of reduced elastic modulus is detailed in [2,6]. Two sets of tests were performed using two types of spherical tungsten carbide indenter whose mechanical characteristics are known; they are shown in Fig.…”

“…Aggregates that comply with the current regulations can be used for road engineering in earthworks, embankments, road layers, car parks, roads and sanitation. NHWI bottom ash similar to a porous granular material in the form of a heterogeneous dark grey mixture of slag, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, glass particles, ceramics and unburnt [2]. They are used for the most part in the field of civil engineering with 80% of the production.…”

“…The thickness of the ballast layer under the sleepers, between 150 mm and 400 mm, depends on the type of sleeper, the speed of the trains and the UIC group of the railway line. The ballast thickness on high-speed lines (LGV) is generally 30 cm under the sleepers [8].…”
