Experiment on Charge Independence in Interactions of Nucleons and Pions

Abstract: though most of their data are described fairly well by this behavior. The most notable deviation is the forward angle point (28° cm.) at 980 Mev, for which the value of O(1OOO)//>(A)>(0) is (0.84±0.11)X10-31 cm 2 /sr compared to an average value of 1.25 or 1.3X10" 31 cm 2 /sr for their data at 1010 Mev, and 1.02 to 1.15 X 10~3 1 cm 2 /sr for the other angles at 980 Mev. This rapid decrease in the forward angle cross section toward low photon energies was not observed in our experiment. The difference of roughly… Show more

“…The measured ratio of the matrix elements squared for the two lower beam momenta of 2.03 ± 0.02 is in agreement with the result R = 2.13 ± 0.13 obtained by Harting et al [15] at a beam energy of 591 MeV. At this energy the differences in the kinematics are expected to be small.…”

“…This principal advantage is lost when the detector does not allow simultaneous measurements as in Ref. 's [14][15][16][17]. Furthermore, these studies are restricted to only a few (up to 4) angles.…”

“…These reactions were measured by Crewe et al [6] at 450 MeV, and by Hartig et al [7] at 591 MeV respectively. This test involves a rather large and uncertain EM correction of about 6% Since there is a large difference between the wave functions of H 3 and He 3.…”

“…1 magnetic spectrometer and do havoc to 39 even the best particle identification system. We note parenthetically, that one of the experiments reported in the literature 80 was run almost precisely at such an undesirable angle at which elastic protons would overwhelm tritons in the focal plane of the spectrometer and another experiment 78 was run at an angle at which pion yield from the pp -> d?r + reaction (from quasi free protons in deuterium)…”
