Experimental and numerical investigation on carbonitrided steel characterization with spherical indentation

Abstract: International audienceThis study investigates the mechanical behavior of a carbonitrided steel, plastically graded material, during a spherical indentation test. We demonstrate that the behavior of a carbonitrided steel can be simulated accurately with a seven layer sample, including the surface, five intermediate layers and the substrate. Moreover, for engineering design simulations which require a lot of calculation time, using three layers provides a good compromise for accuracy. A complete experimental pro… Show more

“…With the help of indentation tests carried out on different scales, a wide range of materials can be characterized: metals, alloys, ceramics, concrete [3] or even graded materials [4][5][6][7][8] and the test can also be applied to an actual structure without the need for cutting-out a specimen for tensile testing. Indentation-based assessment of material properties usually relies on the recorded force-displacement curve (P-h curve) [9][10][11][12] obtained in two main phases.…”

“…In this paper, a methodology was proposed, based on the assumption of a linear variation of the hardening law from the surface to the substrate. This assumption has been justified and validated by Moussa et al [26].…”

“…In previous studies [22,26], a procedure to characterize PGMs was presented. This procedure can be described as follows: "The decreasing hardness profile of carbonitrided steels can be approximated by three zones.…”

“…A third approach was recently developed by C. Moussa et al [17,18] where the difference between an experimental indentation curve and numerical indentation curves obtained from a database is analyzed for determining and n parameters of the Hollomon law. This approach was validated previously by the authors on one of the studied materials in the current paper [19].…”
